We had a fantastic turnout for the first day of our collaborative summer reading program, with around a hundred eager attendees joining us to experience the incredible Zoo to You presentation by Crystal and Ruthie, zookeepers from the Abilene Zoo.
They introduced us to a fascinating lineup of exotic creatures, including a smooth toad, a South American armadillo, a large Sudanese lizard, and a Chihuahuan raven. Fun fact: The South American armadillo is the only armadillo that can roll itself into a ball! And Sam, the Chihuahuan raven, delighted the crowd by saying hello.
We’re already counting down the days until our next exciting event, featuring the South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center from Lubbock. Their team will bring a diverse array of animals for an engaging presentation. And to close out our summer programming in style, we’ll welcome Kami Cabler from Texas Farm Bureau on Tuesday, June 17, at 10 a.m.
Summer Reading Challenge. The children have kicked off their reading challenge for June! For every 10 books they read or have read to them they’ll earn a raffle ticket for a grand prize drawing. Plus, they get to pick a treasure from our prize chest for every 10 books logged. We’ve divided participants into three age groups, each with its own prize category:
• Ages 0 to 5
• Ages 6 to 9
• Ages 9 and up
• Over 18, every 3 books earns a raffle ticket
The grand prize drawing will take place on Monday, June 30, at 4 p.m. right here at the library!
Here are a few diverse suggestions to get you started. They are all in large print and courtesy of the grant from the Tocker Foundation. I encourage you to dive into the unique worlds of “Gypsy Rock” by Robert D. McKee, “Triangle” by Danielle Steel, and “This is Why We Lied” by Karin Slaughter. Each book offers a distinctive perspective and enriches our literary landscape. Whether you’re in the mood for a captivating journey, a heartfelt drama, or a gripping mystery, these selections are sure to provide something for every reader.
