Loose animals have posed a variety of problems for Spur residents in the past, and this week a pack of unrestrained large dogs attacked a group of fenced pet pigs, killing some, according to the pigs’ owner, Gerlinda Dennis.
Dennis, who called emergency services when a friend told her about the attack in progress late Friday afternoon at her rented enclosure on West Green Street north of the Spur school, said she lost two male and female micro pigs from one litter. Four large black dogs had gained entry into a wire-fenced enclosure inside another fence and were aggressive toward the animal control officer and sheriff’s deputies who responded to the call.
Three of the dogs had to be shot, while one ran away, Dennis said. After taking two surviving piglets to the veterinarian in Post for emergency treatment, Dennis returned to take care of burying the dogs’ bodies.
“It’s just unfortunate,” Dennis said. “I feel bad for the dogs.” But Dennis, who also has dogs at her home elsewhere in Spur, stressed that she also felt citizens should be vigilant in reporting stray dogs, especially in packs, for the safety of people as well as pets.
