At a recent meeting of the library board of trustees, the board decided to honor Merla Watson as an honorary lifetime member of the Dickens County-Spur Public Library board of trustees for her years of dedication and service as director, librarian, and board member to the library. A plaque was ordered and received and a small group of board members and I drove to the Kent County Nursing home to present it to her.
The former Merla Foreman spent her whole life in Dickens County. She graduated from Spur High School with the class of 1955.
Merla joined the library after she retired from teaching kindergarten at Spur ISD. Whenever she visits the library she will run into one or more of her former students. It doesn’t matter how many years have passed, Mrs. Watson always remembers each and every one of them. She has had some health issues for the last few months and is truly missed at the library.
When trying to remember what year Merla graduated, I went to the library’s collection of SHS yearbooks. We have a copy of “La Espuela” for every year from 1942 through 2015 with the exception of 1943 and 1944. It is my understanding the production of the yearbook was halted for those two years because of WWII.
We also have copies of Patton Springs “The Ranger” yearbooks dating from 1948 through 1981. There are a few years missing though.
Anyone is welcome to come to the library and look at some or all of the yearbooks. They will have to do it here though, we don’t let these precious items go out the door.
