Patton Springs to close grades 7–12

In recent school board action, the Patton Springs Independent School District passed a resolution to change its mission from Pre-Kindergarten– 12th Grade to Pre-Kindergarten–6th Grade, effective fall term 2025.

Students living within the district who expect to begin 7th through 12th grades in the fall have options of tuition transfer to Spur ISD or Guthrie ISD, according to Interim Superintendent Bryan White. The decision affects approximately 50 current students, including those who are enrolled but live outside the district boundaries.

“Each family will make their own decision,” said White in a telephone interview with The Texas Spur this week. White clarified that affected Patton students who live outside the district will not be affected by the tuition transfer.

The school recently sent a note to parents of all students and has been waiting for their responses to take next steps to prepare for the change. The Texas Spur will follow the matter closely for its effects on students and families, faculty and staff, athletics and extracurriculars, and the district’s finances.

“This decision was not made lightly,” the letter reads. “The Board examined multiple options and engaged in extensive discussion before ultimately determining this course of action, driven by declining enrollment and funding limitations.”

The letter assures parents that under the agreements “students residing within the Patton Springs district who choose to attend either Guthrie or Spur will maintain full UIL eligibility, including immediate eligibility for varsity sports and other competitions,” the letter reads in part.

Patton Springs School was founded in the community of Afton in northern Dickens County in 1911 and incorporated as an independent school district in 1956, according to the institution’s history on its website.
