Spur wins Fri. night, goes 6–0 for season

Last Friday night, Oct. 4, Spur’s Jones Stadium filled with ex-students and fans from all around. There is nothing better than a full stadium to celebrate Homecoming! The Spur Bulldogs clinched another win against O’Donnell.

The game began with a memorial tribute to the late Justin McCormick before Shane Shobert flipped the coin. The Bulldogs won the toss and elected to receive the ball.

On the first play #10 Margarito Pesina returned the kick for a Bulldog touchdown, with two points tacked on by #6 Ace Walker for a 6–0 Spur lead.

The O’Donnell Eagles would work their way to a touchdown, but their extra-point attempt was no good, leaving a score of 8-6 with 2:08 remaining in the first quarter. The Eagles’ onside kick went of bounds and the Bulldogs took over on the 30-yard line.

Walker would score three plays later, with the extra-point attempt being no good. The Eagles responded quickly, tying up the score at14–14 to end the first quarter.

#7 Haden Howell threw a 15-yard pass to Walker for a Bulldog touchdown to start the second half. The extra points were good, bringing the Bulldogs back on top, 22-14.

The Bulldogs would kick onside and recover the ball, getting it back on offense. The Bulldogs worked the ball down the field, resulting in a Bulldog touchdown by #10 Margarito Pesina, who rushed 15 yards to score.

With the score standing at 28-14, O’Donnell worked down the field, but #3 Josh Ortiz intercepted a pass on the goal line and ran it back 35 yards. The ball would be intercepted a few plays later, and O’Donnell would score, for 28-22 with 1:16 left of the first half.

O’Donnell kicked long onside kick, which Pesina returned the kickoff for a Bulldog touchdown; Walker nailed the kick Spur to extend its lead to 36-22.

With only 58 seconds to end the first half, the Bulldogs kicked onside and recovered the ball and Ortiz ran 40 yards to score; the extra points attempt was no good. The half ended with Spur ahead 42–22.

Following the halftime Homecoming celebration, O’Donnell would receive the ball to start the second half. The defenses battled up and down the field during the third quarter, but neither team scored.

In the fourth quarter, O’Donnell scored first, with Spur’s #2 Brandon Garza-West blocking the attempted point-after kick. The Bulldogs would respond with Pesina receiving the ball and running 35 yards for the touchdown. To wind things up, the Bulldogs and Eagles battled defensively, but Spur took the victory in their homecoming game, 48-28.

“It is always great to get a win at Homecoming,” Coach Hamilton said. The Bulldogs now prepare for district play and are hoping to start district off with a win against Silverton, he added.

The Spur Bulldogs will meet the Owls in Silverton Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Come on out to cheer on the Bulldogs in their push to the playoffs!
