Voters in Dickens County will cast their ballots in the primary election Tuesday, March 5. Perhaps the most watched contest will be that for the Republican sheriff candidate in Dickens County, a three-person race with Jay Allen, Romero Rodriquez and Jerry Schmidt each vying for a spot on the general ballot in November. As there is no Democratic candidate running in any county race in Dickens, securing the primary nomination typically predicts the outcome in the general.
Also on the ballot will be Dennis Wyatt, commissioner, precinct 1, who is running unopposed; and Chris Horn, commissioner, precinct 3, who is running for the position, previously held by Charlie Morris, who is not running for re-election.
Stella Carter, who was appointed justice of the peace earlier this year, will be seeking election for her own term, and Rhonda Brendle is on the ballot for tax assessorcollector. Incumbent Rebecca Haney is not seeking re-election.
Dickens County Attorney Aaron Clements has filed for re-election.
In Kent County, incumbent sheriff William “Billy” Scogin will be on the Democratic ballot, and is running unopposed.
On the Kent County Republican ballot, Turney Coulter has filed for precinct 1 commissioner. Longtime commissioner Roy Chisum chose not to seek re-election.
There is a contested race for Kent County precinct 3. Incumbent Daryl Ham has a challenger, Debra Myers.
On the ballot in every county in the state are the offices of sheriff, tax assessorcollector, county attorney, and commissioners of precincts 1 and 3. At press time, no one had filed for county attorney in Kent County, according to county clerk Craig Harrison, which may result in an appointment being made.
In the 110th Judicial District counties of Briscoe, Dickens, Floyd and Motley counties, District Attorney Emily Teegardin, who was appointed to complete the term of predecessor Wade Jackson, will be on the 2024 primary ballot.
