If you’ve been around Lubbock for any time, you know that Ransom Canyon is a lakeside bedroom community in a canyon near Buffalo Springs Lake about 20 minutes east of the Hub City.
Renowned romance novelist Jodi Thomas, who graduated from Texas Tech and lives in Amarillo, set a series of eight books from 2015 to 2019 in a West Texas small town named Crossroads, Texas located near Ransom Canyon.
However, when Hollywood came calling, the setting was changed to the Texas Hill Country, and when Netflix began filming the series, it was shot in and around Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Las Vegas, N.M. (Filming incentives in the Land of Enchantment can be very attractive.)
For West Texans who know the origins of the story, the series should offer some reasons to check it out, especially since we are now in our third year of waiting for the “Four Sixes” TV shows to debut.
After the recent success of the romantic series “Sweet Magnolias,” “Firefly Lane” and “Virgin River” and the cinematic appeal of the modern western, such as “Yellowstone” and its spinoffs, Netflix has married the two and created the series inspired by Thomas.
The show is a romance-fueled family drama and contemporary Western saga, following the lives of three ranching families. According to the studio’s press release, “as three ranching family dynasties are locked in a contest for control of the land, outside forces intent on destroying their way of life threaten their lives and legacies.”
The series stars Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly, James Brolin, Eoin Macken and others.
Netflix has produced 10 episodes of the series.
