Spears withdraws from Spur mayor contest

Spur mayoral candidate Billy Spears shared a statement with The Texas Spur Monday afternoon announcing his withdrawal from the race.

Monday afternoon, as Texas Spur had reached out for candidate bio information in Dickens County races, Spears responded, “I regret to inform you that I no longer seek to be Mayor. This decision is based on the demands of business. I will be ill suited to be Mayor, as my new business obligations will afford very limited time for me to devote to the City of Spur. I believe that my friend John Schmidt will be an excellent Mayor for the City of Spur,” wrote Spears in an email.

“Thank you in advance for making this information available to the voting public,” wrote Spears. “I just believe the citizens of Spur deserve more than I will be able to provide.”

Current multi-term mayor Louise Jones had announced last spring that she would not seek another term. Spears and Schmidt each filed to run.

Election day is May 3; early voting begins April 22.
