Historic bricks salvaged for Spur’s new firehouse represent all five stages of the Spur fire department’s past headquarters, from the city’s first firehouse, on West Harris Street (currently occupied by Star Feed & Seed), to the old city power plant, to bricks saved from the Godfrey Chevrolet building, which was demolished to make way for the new station going up on Burlington Avenue.
Dennis Wyatt, who donated the Godfrey property, said that the plan for the relic bricks was to place them in a pattern among the rock facing on the sides and pillars of the new building. Riley Abbott, Charlie Morris and Eric Swenson helped make the selection in mid-March, and by early April the contractors had all the rock and bricks in place.
Wess Abbott with the Spur VFD reported to the Spur City Council last month that the new firehouse project was nearing completion, and the department hopes to occupy the building by late spring. The department hopes to plan an official dedication ceremony, perhaps during Spur Homecoming in the fall. | THE TEXAS SPUR
