Spur to name pool committee

City’s water contract with solar project wraps up

BARBARA BRANNON | THE TEXAS SPUR In a special meeting March 5, the first order of business for the Spur city council was to cancel its scheduled May election and declare unopposed candidates duly elected.

The deadlines for filing and write-in candidacies have expired, with Kristy Price unopposed for Ward 1, Laidy Vasquez (incumbent) for Ward 2, Landon Hinson for Ward 3.

As there are no propositions on the ballot, said Mayor Louise Jones, the council may declare candidates to be elected to office and cancel election.

Mayor Pro Tem Rhea Melton moved to accept the resolution, with Ortiz seconding. The motion carried with 4 votes in favor, and 2 members absent.

Next, council began the process of appointing a committee to guide on operations of the municipal swimming pool, which they hope to be up and running again this summer.

Mayor Louise Jones reported that contractors operating under partner Galaxy Digital began busting up old concrete that morning. Recognizing that the facility will need a manager, Jones said she would considerrecommendations. She also invited council volunteers to form a committee, in which she would also participate. Vasquez and council member–elect Price were tapped to serve.

Council’s last order of business was to consider a motion to sell water to Mortenson Construction for use in construction at the Texas Solar Nova facility, for a rate up to maximum allowed by agreement.

Mayor Jones shared a letter from Mortenson assistant project manager Jorge Delgado informing the city that Texas Solar Nova will no longer need to extend its water contract, as construction on the project is soon coming to an end. Council memberDonWrightmoved to accept the email; the motion carried by all votes present.

Citizen Paul Scioli, a landowner whose ranch abuts the Texas Solar Nova facility, was on hand to comment regarding the project (and related water usage and environmental impacts) but elected to instead request to be included on the agenda for the next scheduled meeting.

Present were Mayor Jones and council members Melton, Vasquez and Wright, with council member Hope Ortiz joining by phone. Council members Elaine Harris and Glenda White were absent.
