Dickens County EMS and Sheriff’s Office, along with Texas DPS, responded to an emergency call in Spur about 9:45 Monday morning, Aug. 11, regarding the driver of a pickup truck on Hill Street striking a traffic sign and the corner of a house porch.

William Barlow Neaves, 81, of Spur, the only occupant of the vehicle, was described as alert and was transported via ambulance to University Medical Center in Lubbock; his condition was not immediately known by Dickens County Sheriff’s Deputy Ramiro Rodriquez, who responded to the call. As of Tuesday morning, no update had been provided on Neaves’ condition.

The home at the corner of West Hill Street and Carroll Avenue was shaken and damaged by the collision, according to homeowner Donnie Taylor. The impact knocked down a large brick pillar supporting the porch overhang.

“It sounded like an earthquake,” said Donnie’s wife, Crystal Taylor, who was the only one home at the time but was working in the back yard. She realized what had happened only after coming around the house and opening the front door, she said.

Ronnie Bilberry and Jerry Bilberry came to assist in shoring up the porch while Neaves was removed from the pickup.
