At Caprock Canyons State Park in Quitaque, Ranger Natalie has July jam-packed with exciting, educational events. These events are a great way to get you and your family outdoors, whether you’re a camper, a day visitor, or even a local who wants to shoot over to the park just for the event. All events are free with your park admission fee. If you are attending an after-hours event, you may utilize the self-pay station at the Visitor Center for your admission fee.
Summer bat tours via park van are scheduled for July 25, August 1, August 8, August 15, August 22 and August 29. Tours are limited to 13 people on each date.
Visitors will meet at Monks Crossing on Farm to Market Road 689 two hours before sunset. It is highly recommended that you bring bug spray, water, binoculars and a camera for a non-flash photography opportunity. You must make a reservation ahead of time by calling (806) 455-1492.
On Saturday, July 19, enjoy an evening of folk and country music provided by Roger Martin, who has been performing at Caprock Canyons for years. Bring your lawn chair to the Visitor Center Pavilion at 6:30 p.m. to listen and enjoy.
Another artistic opportunity awaits you on Saturday, July 26 at 8:30 a.m. at the Visitor Center Pavilion. In a special outdoor session, be inspired by the rich hues of the Caprock Canyons landscape and its breathtaking palette. Participants will enjoy a hands-on pastel drawing exercise, capturing the colors of the Caprock while learning how shades evoke emotions and tell stories in art. Whether you are an experienced artist or a beginner, this is a great chance to connect with nature and unleash your creativity. All the supplies will be provided, and no hiking boots are required.
After completing your artwork, spend the day hiking or driving around taking in Mother Nature and all she has to offer at the park. As the day wraps up, head over to the Comfort Station Pavilion and cool off with Ranger Natalie over lemonade. Summarize your observations throughout the day with a session of nature journaling while learning all about the different types of prairie grasses and wildflowers and how the Native Americans used them long ago. Display tables with native flora will be presented. All the supplies will be provided.
