A fire of unknown origin Monday night claimed a travel trailer used as a residence in the 3000 block of South 2nd Street in Spur, thoughnoonewasharmed, according to Dickens County Emergency Management Coordinator Matt Hindman. The call came in at 11:02 p.m. and the Spur Volunteer Fire Department, deploying four trucks and 10 firefighters, had the blaze under control by about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Neighbors reported sounds like “pop and cracking” or “an explosion.” The small camper was a total loss, but Hindman said there was no evidence of any kind of incendiary material at the site. “We’re going to call [the cause] undetermined; the trailer was too far gone to tell the cause,” said Hindman, who noted that there were some propane bottles on the site, and tires can pop in a fire as well.
Hindman verified that there were no injuries to persons, but two male residents have been displaced, he said. Onlookers and neighbors offered different stories, speculating on the fire’s cause; the fire department does not plan to pursue an investigation.
Hindman did add a caution about travel-trailer or residential safety. “We highly advise people to use a proper extension cord and that it’s rated for the load it needs to carry” in any situation, he said.
