Some thoughts following last week’s “Meet the Candidates”
First off, I found it disappointing to be the only sheriff’s candidate at the debate Thursday evening. I was looking forward to discussing our county’s issues with the other candidates. Thank you to all who came out to hear what I had to say.
I want to share a few subjects that I covered Thursday.
I believe that what sets me apart from the other candidates is my drive and extensive law enforcement training and experience with the Texas Department of Public Safety. As a Highway Patrol trooper, I learned the intricacies of our state’s laws and how to enforce them without bias.
I understand the importance of training and practice and will ensure that this department is professional, knowledgeable and prepared for any emergency.
I believe that being proactive is the key to making Dickens County a safe and desirable place to live. Community patrols and engagement with our neighbors, among other changes, will help us all to maintain a constructive dialogue. I want to hear your concerns.
Dickens embodies the independent spirit of the West but we are not disconnected from the problems of the modern world. Drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness, mental-health issues and more affect us as a community.
In addition to protecting our citizens, as the sheriff, I would like to see the creation of outreach programs that can uplift our neighbors and provide real solutions to destructive behaviors.
Transparency is important and goes a long way toward building trust between residents and law enforcement. To that end, I will issue a monthly report of the department’s activities and will maintain a Facebook page where residents may voice their concerns.
In the meantime, I invite my Dickens County neighbors to visit my Facebook page, facebook.com/Schmidtforsheriff, for insight into my goals as sheriff.
For a real and positive change with proven results, not empty promises, vote Jerry Schmidt. ●
