Those who made the journey north and battled the army of mosquitos last Friday night, Sept. 14, to watch the Spur Bulldogs pound the Motley County Matadors, 60–28, saw glimpses of what this Bulldog team is capable of. “Our boys came out to play today; they had something to prove to everybody,” said Coach Tate Clark after the game.
Maybe it was the early season prediction that they’d finish last in their district. Maybe it was letting a Crowell game slip away. Maybe it was being picked to lose in Matador. Whatever the motivation, the Bulldogs were fed up, and Motley County suffered the consequences.
The offense traveled through Ethan Parsons who rushed for 179 yards on 27 carries with 6 touchdowns. Parsons was also the leading passer, going 8 of 12 for 133 yards. Jacob Cole (10/120) and Zage Barron (2/7) each added a touchdown and Rigo Mendez added the final 12 by way of extra-point kicks. The offense was rolling.
Clark said, “Offensively I had a lot of kids that came out and made catches and everything else. So once again, like last week, I’d give credit to the whole team, but there were a couple of them that came out and made plays.”
The couple Clark referred to are his defensive tackles. Call them men among boys, call them titans of the gridiron, call them absolutely dominant, but don’t call plays to run the ball right at them. The Matador offense had no solution for senior Jake Weiser and sophomore Beau Martinez.
After the game, Clark commented, “Running a 4-2 [defense] against a T [offense] is very hard. Beau and Jake stopped the gaps, stuffed them up all night long and it was awesome. I think they are some stand-out players.” Martinez led the team with 7 tackles, Weiser led with 1 1/2 sacks, and together they kept the Matador quarterback on the run and decimated the inside running game of Motley County.
The players’ focus now shifts to Spur’s Friday night homecoming battle against Southland (0-3), who most recently lost to Wellman-Union, 43-42. Coach Clark’s focus will be keeping that chip on his player’s shoulders.
