The Spur Bulldogs saw their first action this year against White Deer in the four-team scrimmage in Valley on Friday night.
After the JV battled against White Deer, Petersburg and Valley, the varsity boys saw action against Valley and White Deer. While it can be difficult to score a scrimmage, what was immediately clear was the willingness of the Bulldogs to play physical football.
Led by Jake Weiser and Ethan Parsons, the Bulldogs came ready to hit. This aggressive tone paid off as the Bulldog defense had periods of dominance against the Valley Patriots, at one point forcing three turnovers on downs in a row.
This desire for physical football is a sermon Coach Tate Clark preaches to his boys. “That’s what I told the boys. You come out here and you’re playing against big teams, and fast teams, you’ve got to be intense,” said Clark after the scrimmage. He went on to say, “I think it went pretty good. We saw some good things out of the boys but we still have a lot to work on. That’s the good thing about a scrimmage. We finally get some live play with our big boys instead of going against the JV. We realize we’ve got to pick up the intensity a little bit, but I think that we kind of showed out pretty well today.”
One of those nice plays came when Parsons took a cut just inside the left tackle for a 60-yard touchdown down the sideline.
While the first scrimmage of the year certainly leaves room for improvement, the Bulldogs showed enough grit and fight to give plenty of reason for excitement for the upcoming season. The Bulldogs will be in Spur this Thursday, Aug. 23, at 7:30 p.m. hosting a scrimmage against a Paducah team that has already caught the eye of coach Clark as a big team which will require more of the same intensity the Bulldogs showed this week.
