The O’Donnell Eagles may have finally revealed the blueprint for stopping the Bulldog offense—lightning. Friday night’s contest began with a 30-minute lightning delay and Spur was leading 21-6 at halftime when the game was called due to the storms.
Coach Clark was not available for interview as he could only be reached by canoe. However, his Bulldogs departed O’Donnell with a 5-1 record headed into their bye-week with plenty of things to build on as well as correct. On the positive side the Bulldogs are firing on all cylinders offensively. Ethan Parsons turned in another strong performance on the night as he carried the ball 8 times for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns. His cat-quick agility and deep passing ability make him a nightmare for opposing coaches. Parsons shares the backfield with Jacob Cole whose one-cut running style and acceleration resembles something from the old-school era of Dorsett or Dickerson. The two backs complement each other well and form a strong foundation for this offense.
Defensively, it’s easy to love the aggressive play on the line from Jake Weiser and Beau Martinez. With those two in the game, the opposition can all but forget about running up the middle. Francisco Hernandez is a tackling machine and the Cole twins (Jacob and Nicolas) have found their niche defending passes. Throw in the aggressive hitting styles of Keaton Adams, Zage Barron and Parsons, and the defense can dominate at times as well.
As the Bulldogs prepare to march through one of the toughest districts in 6-man football—featuring Ira, Aspermont and Hermleigh—they will need both units to play at top form. While the Bulldogs are certainly on a roll, Coach Clark will still have plenty of coaching points with his boys. The Bulldogs did have 2 fumbles on the night; they did give up a 49-yard passing touchdown; and they did surrender an on-side kick to the Eagles. These are the types of issues Coach Clark and Coach Russell Conrad will be working to correct during the bye.
When the Bulldog season resumes at home on Friday, Oct. 19, the games will be “for real” as they will host their first district game against the unbeaten Ira Bulldogs. Ira may want to pray for rain. [Spur JH (5-0) defeats O’Donnell JH 51-6]
