Many a sportswriter and social media armchair pundit has noted that District 15-1A is rich with talent — that several of the teams in that district could have won a district crown in any other UIL classification.
Case in point: One of the regional quarterfinals which is set to be played Tuesday, Feb. 26 after this issue goes to press features two 15-1A rivals — the Spur Bulldogs and the district champs, the Paducah Dragons.
To earn the privilege of seeing if they could be “dragon slayers,” the Spur Bulldogs plucked the Cardinals of Hermleigh out of the playoffs. The 9-0 District 13-1A champion Cardinals have a storied basketball tradition in the small town of 345, about a dozen miles east of Snyder. This year, the Hermleigh Lady Cardinals toppled local Cinderella team, the Patton Springs Lady Rangers, as well as the Lady Jays of Jayton en route to their back-to-back ticket to the state finals.
However, the Spur Bulldogs triumphed over the Hermleigh boys’ team 59-50 on Thursday, Feb. 21, setting up their third face-off this year against Paducah. The Dragons prevailed in the previous two meetings, and they are currently riding a 12-game winning streak. If you’d like to know if the third time was a charm, check the Texas Spur’s Facebook page. We’ll post the outcome as soon as it’s available.
Tip-off between Spur and Paducah was set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 in Floydada.
The other Regional Quarterfinal features the Jayton Jaybirds taking on the Mun-day Moguls at McMurry in Abilene. If something about that match-up sounds familiar, it may be that last week the Jaybirds were also in a playoff contest at McMurry in Abilene.
On Friday, Feb. 22, the Jayton Jaybirds were victorious over Lueders Avoca 71-50 at McMurry.
The Munday Moguls were the District 16-1A champions with a district record of 11-2 and a season record of 15-7.
The only similar match-up between the Jaybirds and the Moguls is that District 15-1A rival Spur beat the Moguls in a year-end tournament in late December 50-47. In the last meeting between the Jaybirds and the Spur Bulldogs, Jayton came out on top 54-44.
