Tate Clark picked up his first career win as head coach as the Spur Bulldogs took to a soggy field and manhandled the Meadow Broncos Friday night, Sept. 7 to a score of 64-14.
The Bulldogs came out a bit sluggish, but it didn’t take them long to set things right. Clark said after the game, “Tonight we came out a little sloppy in the first quarter, then we cleaned it up and did what we know we’re capable of doing which is going out there and running the ball and throwing the ball and doing what we’re good at.”
The turning point in the game came midway through the second quarter in what had been a back-and-forth contest. Meadow returned a kickoff 42 yards for a touchdown to bring the game within 4 points. It was a pivotal score for the Broncos, but it would also be their last.
Spur immediately answered with a 3-play scoring drive, and then crushed all hopes for Meadow on the next possession when Keaton Adams intercepted a pass deep in Bulldog territory. The Bulldogs would score 46 unanswered points to claim the lopsided victory.
While Adams brought strong defensive play to the game, Jacob Cole added another dominant performance on the offensive side, carrying the ball 26 times for 249 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns. Cole also added a 38-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Sanchez.
Adams and Cole provided the leadership, but after the game Clark was impressed by the overall team effort. “I had backups in all night long,” Clark said. “I told them, ‘All I ask of you is that we can’t tell that you’re out there when we get you out there,’ and we couldn’t. We had our backups in on defense and we stopped them, we had backups run the ball. The entire team made a difference today.”
The Bulldogs (1-1) travel to Motley County Friday, Sept. 14 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Motley County is 2-0 after thumping Hart 54-6 this past Friday. [JV Bulldogs (1-1) fell to Borden County JV.]
