Last week was a busy one for Dickens County 4-H.
On Monday the Horse and Livestock Quiz Bowl Teams traveled to Vernon for district competition. Quiz Bowl is a fun educational contest that tests a members knowledge using a game show format.
Both contests utilize several reference sources, and members need to be familiar with a large amount of information. The Junior/ Intermediate Livestock team of Calvin Hays Chapman, Henry Chapman, Rylee Foster and Grayson James emerged grand champions. The Junior/ Intermediate Horse Team of Paisley Smith, Marley Hammonds, Tyler Phillips and Maddee Foster placed 5th out of 14 teams.
On Wednesday 13 members returned to Vernon for Educational Presentations at District Round-Up and Consumer Education Contest.
All Dickens County senior members qualified for State Round-Up (only seniors are eligible to attend). Jaydee Foster took 2nd place with “Colon Cancer”; Jeri Holcomb and Mackenzie Gardner placed 2nd with “Misleading FOP Labels”; and Lynndee Foster placed 3rd with “Manipulating Mares’ Cycles Using Light.”
Intermediate presenters were Maddee Foster (1st place) on ADHD; Paisley Smith (2nd place) on Horse Colic; Marley Hammonds (3rd place) on Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis-EPM; and Grayson James (3rd place) on Grain Bin Safety.
At the Junior level, Calvin Hays Chapman took 1st place with a presentation on Progressive Ataxia in Charolais Cattle. Henry Chapman took 2nd place with a presentation on Cattle Bloat. Rylee Foster took 2nd place with a presentation on Knife Safety. Reid Hammonds and Averi Lennon-Torres presented on Cat Care.
The Intermediate Consumer Decision Team of Marley Hammonds, Grayson James and Paisley Smith placed 6th overall, with Smith high point individual.
The Junior Consumer Decision Team of Calvin Hays Chapman, Henry Chapman and Rylee Foster placed 6th overall, and Calvin Hays was 2nd place in reasons.
