On December 5, five members of the Dickens County 4-H club attended the District 3 Contests for Livestock Skill-a-Thon and Ag Product Identification in Young County.
Livestock Skill-a-Thon tests a member’s knowledge of breeds, equipment and feeds along with judging hay, wool and meat. Participants also have to be able to analyze a feed tag and medicine label and answer questions about a specific scenario; be able to identify cuts of meat by species, primal and retail name; and take an Industry Quiz.
The team of CalvinHays Chapman, Henry Chapman, Maddee Foster and Rylee Foster placed 3rd overall, with CalvinHays placing 4th high individual and Henry being 7th high individual.
Ag Product ID tests their knowledge of all Texasproduced agricultural products, from fruits, vegetables and trees, to seafood and grains. Participants are given 30 products to identify and to answer questions concerning any aspect of the product, such as how many acres are grown in Texas, what the main nutrient in the item is, where it is grown, or how to care for the item.
The team of CalvinHays Chapman, Maddee Foster, Grayson James and Rylee Foster won Grand Champion. CalvinHays was 2nd high individual, and Maddee Foster tied for 3rd.
Henry Chapman competed as a junior and tied for 10th place.
