Dickens County 4-H hosted a Fashion and Sewing Camp on July 2. Fashionistas from several counties came to learn about the fashion and interior design project.
We started off discussing the different contests that are available: Sewing, Buying and Refashion. Refashion is taking an existing garment—in our case a man’s white undershirt—and turning it into a completely different garment. We made swimsuit coverups. The members took the shirts, cut small strips into the bottom, and then using pony beads, made colorful patterns.
Many of the girls had their first experience with a sewing machine. They made simple holiday aprons that were lined and used a grosgrain ribbon for the waistband. We had great help from Jeri Holcombe, our State Fashion Ambassador, Mackenzie Gardner, senior 4-H member and County Extension Agent Amanda Spiva.
