    DICKENS 4-H The Dickens County 4-H Club convened a parent leader-officer meeting on July 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the 4-H Center in Dickens. Attendees included Amanda Spiva (CEA), Jody Duggan (shooting sports), Shantel Foster, Tanya Phillips, Cheyenne Bilberry and Ronda Dalton, along with 4-H club officers Henry and CalvinHays Chapman.

    Registration, Aug. 15.

    Registration for the 2025– 26 4-H year opens August 15 for current members and September 1 for new members. The initial club meeting is scheduled for September 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the 4-H Center.

    Awards banquet, Oct. 14. The annual awards banquet will be held on October 14, with the exact time and location to be announced. The highly anticipated event honors youth achievements in Record Book completion as well as recipients of the esteemed Bronze, Silver and Gold Star Awards.

    During the meeting, leaders and officers reviewed upcoming projects, fundraising initiatives, and community service opportunities designed to engage members of all ages. Parents and officers also contributed ideas to increase participation and cultivate an inclusive environment for both new and returning members. Families are encouraged to remain informed through regular newsletters and the club website, where updates and key dates will be posted throughout the upcoming 4-H year.

    VetScience Day Camp.

    On July 11, Henry and CalvinHays Chapman participated in the VetScience Day Camp in Lubbock. Hosted in collaboration with Texas Tech University veterinary students, the camp offered hands-on learning opportunities, including an introduction to various surgical instruments, names and how they work. Other camp activities featured discussions on rabbit veterinary care and a fascinating owl pellet dissection, allowing participants to explore animal biology firsthand. Additionally, attendees learned about different breeds of horses and dogs, expanding their knowledge of animal science and care.

    District record books, July 15. Dickens County was set to take six record books to be judged at the District Level on July 15 (results not available at press time this week).
