The Spur Bulldogs faced off against their third straight top-twenty opponent Friday night, Nov. 3 at Jones Stadium, and after narrowly falling to Ira and Aspermont, the Bulldogs would leave no doubt against the Hermleigh Cardinals, defeating them 80-53 on a game that never was that close.
After the game Coach Clark said, “We came out in the first half swinging. We thought we were going to end them right after half. All we needed was a touchdown and one stop. We only gave up 12 points in the first half. I don’t know if we laid back a little or got too relaxed, I don’t know what it was. It’s a big win for us because Hermleigh was supposed to be one of the top dogs in district as well. It’s nice being able to do that without [Ethan] Parsons in the game.”
The Bulldogs took a 52-14 lead into halftime, just 8 points away from the 45 point mercy rule. It was actually nothing but mercy that allowed the Cardinals to hang around the rest of the game. The Bulldogs played faster, played more physically, and played with more confidence throughout the contest. Clark added, “Franny (Francisco Hernandez) once again had a big game, had a lot of deep balls. I had good catches from all my receivers. We had a lot of boys stepping up and making plays.”
Hernandez rushed the ball 16 times for 152 yards, threw for 164 more, and had 16 yards receiving with a remarkable 8 total touchdowns. He also led the team with 12 tackles on defense. Jacob Cole rushed for 74 more yards, but made his presence felt more on the defensive side of the ball with 7 tackles and 3 interceptions. The Bulldogs leading receiver was Isaiah Sanchez who caught 4 for 122 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Apart from the drop in intensity in the second half, it was a dominant victory over a stout Hermleigh team. Unfortunately, on this same night the Bulldogs’ playoff hopes would end when Aspermont fell to Ira 48-40, once again demonstrating just how close the competition in this district is. The Bulldogs will conclude their season in Rotan (4-4) this Friday night, Nov. 9. [The Spur JV (3-5) and the Spur JH (8-0) will conclude their games this Thursday, Nov. 8 in Spur at 5:30 p.m.]
