The Bulldogs closed out their season Friday defeating the Rotan Yellowhammers 46-20. It was a game the Bulldogs were expected to win but injuries and a malfunctioning scoreboard made this one tougher than it should have been.
After the game Coach Tate Clark noted, “It’s been rough this past couple of weeks with kids being injured and trying to find spots for people. It’s also tough when the clock’s not working and you don’t know where you’re setting the whole time or how much time you’ve got left, or where the play clock is. I thought the kids fought hard. Just a few small mistakes that gave up big plays. But a win’s a win any way you can get it. So, we end up 7 and 3 and I’m proud of that.”
On this night injury came for Ethan Parsons, who carried the ball one time for a 44-yard touchdown and then was done for the night. Jacob Cole suffered a leg injury after 5 carries for 51 yards. The Bulldogs would turn to Nicolas Cole to carry the ball who was good for 50 yards on 7 carries, but the workhorse of the night was Francisco Hernandez.
If the Bulldogs line up to run a sprint, I doubt Hernandez is going to win. If they work drills to express agility, he’s likely third or fourth on the list, but if you’re measuring heart, he’s in a category all his own. Week after week down the stretch as skill players went down with injury, there was Hernandez putting the team on his back and willing the team to victory. In Rotan he returned a kickoff 40 yards for a touchdown, rushed 6 times for 94 yards and a touchdown, passed for 44 yards with a touchdown and led the team with 9 tackles. Hernandez, along with a healthy Parsons and Cole are the reasons the Bulldogs are able to look to next season with such overwhelming optimism.
Clark was asked after the game about his best memory of the season. He noted the Matador game but ultimately, he looked to the future saying, “We’ve got a lot of kids coming back so we’re going to make a lot more memories.” The future is indeed bright for the Bulldogs.
