The Crowell Wildcats defeated the Spur Bulldogs 42–38 Saturday, Sept. 1 in Jayton. When asked immediately after the game about his feelings, Coach Tate Clark said, “Lots of mistakes lost us the game. We probably had about 100 yards of penalties in the first half.”
Penalties certainly played a role in the game but the two mistakes that the Bulldogs were never able to overcome were a pair of goal line interceptions on back-to-back drives in the second quarter. The first occurred with the Bulldogs first-and-goal at the 10. The ball was picked right at the goal line and returned 80 yards for a Crowell touchdown. History repeated itself on the very next possession. Spur faced fourth-and-two at the 5-yard line and again saw the ball intercepted.
In a 4-point loss, those plays make the difference. Despite the loss, Clark was especially encouraged by the boys’ fight on Saturday. Clark noted, “Zage [Barron] went out hurt, he got back in and started working for us. Jacob Cole came out hurt, he got back in and started working. Franny [Hernandez] was cramping and Jake [Weiser] was cramping nearly all game, they were still in there getting reps in. Ethan [Parsons], we didn’t know if he was even going to play today, he got in there and scored a couple of touchdowns for us. That’s all I can ask for is that the kids fight through some stuff.”
The Bulldog defensive line is encouraging. Jake Weiser and Beau Martinez were continually in the backfield making tackles for loss. Martinez recorded a tackle for no gain on a fourth-and-three and a quarterback sack in the first quarter, then added an interception in the second.
Another bright spot in the game was Cole, who carried the ball 11 times for 76 yards and two touchdowns and added a third score on a 52-yard kick-off return. Also impressive is the tough running of Barron who led the Bulldogs in rushing with 98 yards on 14 carries. The Bulldogs home opener is Friday, Sept. 7 against Meadow, who lost last week to Paducah 58-30.
Spur junior varsity (JV) defeated Petersburg JV 26-13.
