Guthrie, Jayton advance to State UIL

Of the 53 high schools in Region 2, Class 1A

in Texas Spur Country, both Guthrie and Jayton achieved high standings in the University Interscholastic League Spring Meet competition April 12–13, 2019, at Angelo State University. Guthrie High School finished first overall.

Representing Guthrie High School at the meet were Hanna McCulloch, Brandon Passmann, TK Mays, Coulter Reel, Brylee Smith, Hallie Richardson, Kaleb Brendle, Shaylee Boger, Maggie Jenkins, JJ Gibson, Morgan McCauley, Brittney Brandon, Mary Gilliland, Eli Jenkins, Rachel Brendle, Abigail Jones, Brance Boger, Zac Ballard, Faith Keasler, Sheridon Smith, Taylor Moore, and Levi Jones.

Individual Awards at the Meet went to:

These students qualified for the state meet in the following events: Brandon Passmann – Number Sense Coulter Reel – Feature Writing, Editorial Writing, Literary Criticism, News Writing, and Number Sense Eli Jenkins – Science Faith Keasler – Prose Hanna McCulloch – Number Sense Kaleb Brendle – Poetry and Literary Criticism Shaylee Boger – Science TK Mays – Literary Criticism, Mathematics, and Number Sense Zac Ballard – News Writing Taylor Moore – Prose Hallie Richardson – LD Debate and Literary Criticism From Jayton High School, the UIL academic state qualifiers are the Accounting Team (which won 1st place team) of Abby Coulter (1st place Individual), Katelyn Watson (2nd place Individual), Hunter Gilbert (3rd place Individual) and Pecos Smith. Abby Coulter placed 2nd in Editorial Writing and is state alternate in Copy Editing (placing 5th). Hailey Norvell placed 3rd in Persuasive Speaking, while Brynn Yanez is a state alternate in Ready Writing (5th Place) and Kloe Thomas is a state alternate in Informative Speaking (6th Place).
