One thing that can’t be controlled on a football field—apart from rain—is the skill level of the opposing team. Going into the game last Friday night, Sept. 21, it was no secret that the Southland Eagles were not the strongest opponent on the schedule. So, the Spur Bulldogs did what good teams do. They remained focused, did their job, and decisively defeated the Eagles 52-0 in front of a homecoming crowd.
After the game Head Coach Tate Clark said, “I think everyone we expected to do well, did pretty well tonight. The defense got a shutout on them, that’s something that hasn’t happened in a while. So, I was proud of them on that.”
The defense was indeed dominant on the night, yielding only 13 total yards to the Southland offense. Southland only threatened the Bulldogs one time, fourth-and-goal from the 8-yard line, but Spur’s Beau Martinez intercepted the pass and returned it across midfield. On Southland’s next possession, the “Bash Brothers” (Martinez and Jake Weiser) forced the quarterback into an errant throw which Francisco Hernandez intercepted and took to the house.
Offensively the Bulldogs were also firing on all cylinders. Ethan Parsons led the attack carrying the ball 6 times for 148 yards and 3 touchdowns and passing for another.
The starters did pretty well but Coach Clark was just as impressed with his younger players. “Prouder that we were able to get some of our backups in and get some needed reps from them so that when we get into the bigger games we can throw them in and know that we can trust them.” When asked if any of his backups stood out that night, he quickly responded, “Nicolas [Cole]; he hasn’t had a whole lot of reps, and he had two touchdowns for us today.”
Also noted was Paden Shafer who led the team in tackles with 4. Clark said, “Paden played good for us, he’s a kid that you can put in there any time and he’s going to do what he needs to do.” The same could be said for the entire team on Friday.
The Bulldogs host the Ropes Eagles (2-2) this Friday night, Sept. 28. Ropes was most recently defeated by Hermleigh 51-28. [Spur JH (2-0) defeated Southland JH 46-0).]
