Do you remember the first time you watched Sylvester Stallone’s “Rocky?” Rocky Balboa takes on the champ, and although he loses the fight in the end, his drive and endurance leave you so impressed that you almost feel like he won the fight. Well, cue up the “Rocky” music as you read this article because the Spur Bulldogs demonstrated that kind of heart in the heavyweight fight that occurred in Aspermont last Friday night, Oct. 26.
It was a battle more than worth the price of admission; the tragedy was that somebody had to lose. On Friday it was the Bulldogs who fell short to Aspermont 64-54. The one regret is that Spur would have at least liked a chance to play Aspermont at full strength. The Bulldogs were already without Jake Weiser, who was serving a half-game suspension for a questionable call and ejection in the Ira game; then Ethan Parsons went down on the second play of the game with a hamstring injury and could not return. Keaton Adams had to sit most of the 3rd quarter in concussion protocol and Jacob Cole was limited in the second half while favoring an ankle.
Still The Bulldogs gave the Hornets all they could handle. Coach Tate Clark said, “I told them that I’m proud of them because they never gave up. We were down nearly 20 and we fought back to within 2. We had some players that played their butts off tonight. That’s something you ask for and something you love to see.”
Some of those players that showed up big in defeat where Cole, who rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown; passed for 39 yards and 2 touchdowns; amassed 113 yards in kickoff returns with a touchdown; and recovered a fumble for a safety. Francisco Hernandez rushed for 65 yards; passed for 161 yards with 2 touchdowns; returned a kickoff 55 yards for a score; and led the team with 6 tackles. Adams had 3 receptions for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns. The boys just never gave up.
The Bulldogs final home game will be this Friday night, Nov. 3, against Hermleigh (3-4) who most recently lost to Aspermont 76-50. [Spur JV (3-4) defeats Aspermont JV 73-7; Spur JH (7-0) defeats Aspermont JH 53-24]
