The Jayton Jaybirds were dominant during their homecoming game as they defeated the Trent Gorillas 58 to 0.
The Jaybirds, now 3-2 on the season, were able to handle the Gorillas on both sides of the ball, refusing to allow their opponents an opportunity to gain ground. On defense, the Gorillas were unable to gain any yardage in the rushing or passing game. Senior Tye Scogin led all defenders with 8 tackles. Sophomore Pecos Smith and junior Cameron Benavides each returned fumbles for long touchdowns.
On offense, the Jayton attack was balanced and dangerous. Scogin led all rushers with 48 yards and 1 touchdown while senior Keldon Moorhead and freshman Caleb Chisum scored their first touchdowns of the season. Junior Aaron Hernandez also had a rushing touchdown. When asked what went through his mind scoring his first Jaybird touchdown on varsity, Chisum exclaimed, “All I could feel was joy and excitement.” Senior quarterback Kaden Awe was efficient through the air with two passes that were brought in by Smith and Benavides for touchdowns.
Sophomore place-kicker Tripp Scott converted 5 PAT attempts for Jayton. Scott, who is a newcomer, spoke about his role after the game. “We work on kicking every day and take it very seriously. We know that converting our attempts can determine if we win or lose a game.” When asked about his experiences so far in Jayton, Scott said, “I have felt loved and included from the first day my family came to Jayton. I love being a Jaybird.”
Jayton will not have long to celebrate their win before preparing for their game against the Rotan Yellowhammers scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5. Rotan will host Jayton during their homecoming. The Jaybirds will look to building on a 3-game winning streak and to be in the driver’s seat going into the district season.
This meeting will carry extra drama for both communities because the head coaches for their respective programs are brothers. John Stanaland has begun his first year in Rotan after several years in Nazareth. Josh Stanaland and the Jaybirds will have their hands full as they will travel to play the Yellowhammers
