The Jayton Jaybirds were hungry to take the field against their non-district opponent the Chillicothe Eagles in the third contest of the season. So hungry, in fact, that they recovered their own opening onside kick and never looked back for the rest of the game. The Jaybirds dominated the Eagles on both sides of the ball to win easily 56–0.
Returning to the lineup were senior Keldon Moorhead and junior Aaron Hernandez who proved how Jayton can play when at full strength with all starters healthy.
Early in the game, the Jaybirds exploded for 40 first-quarter points to overwhelm the Eagles. The defense forced three turnovers (2 fumble recoveries and 1 interception) and the offense totaled 325 yards on the ground and the air.
Junior Tye Scogin ran for 134 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the rushing attack. Hernandez averaged 22 yards per carry and ran in a touchdown. Sophomore Tripp Scott caught two touchdown passes and also converted all 7 of his PATs. Sophomore Caleb Valerio and freshman Joel Williams each threw touchdown passes. The Jaybirds were all over the field allowing several of their players opportunities to do damage against the Eagles.
Hernandez provided one of the highlights of the game on defense when he scooped up a fumble and zig-zagged his way down the field before dragging a defender with him as he fell into the end zone. Senior Kaden Awe led the defense with 7 total tackles. The stingy Jaybird defense provided the main reason the game was over by halftime.
Head Coach Josh Stanaland was pleased with his team’s performance. “We came tonight expecting to play well,” said Stanaland. “We were looking to improve after a great week of practice and we are excited for the rest of the season. Next week’s game against Wilson will be a tough matchup and we look forward to the challenge.”
The Jaybirds will play on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m., preceded by the junior high game at 5:30 p.m.
