On the opening play of the game, the Rule Bobcats gained 12 rushing yards on the Jayton Jaybirds. This play would be one of the few gains the Bobcats would see for the rest of the evening. Jayton dominated Rule on both sides of the line of scrimmage to win easily 59-0. The Jaybirds, now 6-2 on the season, had come off of two straight bye weeks and proved that they were more than ready to take the field as the district season is drawing to a close.
On offense, the Jaybirds relied completely on their rushing attack. Sophomore running back Pecos Smith led the Jaybirds in scoring with 3 carries that all resulted in touchdowns. Junior running back Tye Scogin followed suit with 2 scores on the same number of carries. Junior Aaron Hernandez also recorded a rushing touchdown. Sophomore Tripp Scott has proved to be a reliable place kicker, converting on many of his PAT attempts.
Junior defensive linemen Evan Cheyne led all Jayton defenders with 10 tackles. Smith had 1 interception while Scogin was all over the place with 1 forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 defensive touchdown. Another bright spot came from Jayton’s kicking game as they pinned Rule against their own goal line several times.
With the Rule game behind them, the Jaybirds now look to their next game as they travel to Lueders on Nov. 2 to play the Raiders for the Region 2 District 7 Championship. The Raiders, like the Jaybirds, have seen great success this season and they look to continue their winning ways deep into the playoffs. Both teams will look to prove to the rest of their region that they will not be denied recognition. Many teams in Texas will have their eyes on this tough matchup.
