After a heartbreaking loss against Leuders-Avoca, the Jayton Jaybirds found their footing against the playoff-bound Groom Tigers in a 62–16 victory. The Jaybirds exploded with a 34 point 2nd quarter, overwhelming the Tigers, and never looked back. The Jaybirds, now 7 and 3 on the season, have proved to be a tough playoff matchup with their strong running game and stingy defense. Jayton now awaits with expectation who they will meet in the postseason.
On offense, the Jaybirds were unstoppable on the ground game, totaling 410 yards. Junior running back Tye Scogin had 8 rushes for 134 yards and 3 touchdowns. Junior running back Aaron Hernandez and sophomore running back Pecos Smith each had two rushing scores. Thomas Mullen was also able to tack on a touchdown to round out the offensive rushing attack. Senior quarterback Kaden Awe connected with junior Evan Cheyne in the air for a touchdown. Hernandez converted all 3 of his PAT attempts.
Junior defensive back Cameron Benavides had an interception on defense and Smith, Scogin and Cheyne each recovered fumbles. The defense continued to keep the Tigers at bay through strong tackling lead by Scogin, Awe and Cheyne. The Tigers entered the game 7 and 2, carrying a strong ranking by Six-Man Football in Texas. This game was a solid test for the Jaybirds as they prepare to make waves in the postseason.
Coach Josh Stanaland and the Jaybirds will spend the next week preparing for the announcement of their playoff opponent. The Jaybirds know that any opponent they face will not be the main focus of their game. When the Jaybirds put together a complete game, there are few teams that they will face who have the ability to bring them down. The Jaybirds and their strong fan base are looking forward to the postseason.
