As cooler weather was welcomed to West Texas, the Jayton Jaybirds were able to stay hot as they defeated the Wilson Mustangs 62 to 14 on Wilson’s home field. Playing with a healthy roster proved to make the difference for this Jayton team looking to put together a complete effort on both sides of the ball against a stiff Wilson team. The Wilson offense was able to move the ball in the air and Jayton had the opportunity to knock on their door early as they made it to the red zone.
The Jayton defense proved to be stingy and had two early goal-line stands to cut off the Mustangs’ opportunities to score. The Jaybird defense forced 4 turnovers (3 interceptions and 1 fumble recovery), evidence of serious improvement. Sophomore Pecos Smith (10 tackles) and senior Kaden Awe (8 tackles) led the way for the Jaybirds. The Mustangs were able to gain a mere 5 yards on the ground for the entire game.
On offense, junior Tye Scogin ran the ball for 160 yards and 3 touchdowns while Smith complemented the Jaybird ground attack with 76 rushing yards and a touchdown of his own. Awe and junior Aaron Hernandez each connected on 2 touchdowns on their own to junior Cameron Benavides (2 touchdowns), Smith and sophomore Tripp Scott. Scott converted on 7 of 8 PAT attempts.
While the Jaybirds were able to defeat their Mustang opponents by halftime, they did not take them for granted. The Mustangs brought a tough attack and were all over the field keeping the Jaybirds honest and committed to their own offensive and defensive approach. The turning point of the game for Jayton was their insistence on finishing every play to keep the Mustangs from scoring in the red zone.
With the non-district schedule dwindling down quickly, the Jaybirds will begin to prepare for the district season looking to build on everything that they have accomplished. With each piece of their team beginning to lock into place, there is no reason to believe that Head Coach Josh Stanaland can’t lead the Jaybirds to a district title and deep playoff run.
At 2-2 on the season, the Jaybirds will now turn to their homecoming matchup on Friday, Sept. 28 against Trent.
