The Jayton Jaybirds took home the victory in the inaugural Loraine 6 on 6 Classic, 44-20, last Saturday.
Jayton struck quickly in the championship game, scoring on the second play of the game via an 18-yard touchdown pass. They tacked on a 2-point conversion moments later and took an 8-0 lead less than a minute into the showdown.
The Jaybirds stretched their lead to 24-0 minutes later. Their second TD came via a 15-yard touchdown pass, and their third on an 11-yard strike with less than 3 minutes to play in the first half.
Loraine got its offense rolling from there. The Bulldogs scored on a 30yard touchdown strike from Santana Pantoja to Nathan Santana just before the half. The touchdown pulled Loraine to within 24-6 at the break.
Jayton regained the momentum early in the second half. After ending Loraine’s first drive of the half with an interception, the Jaybirds came up big on their snap, scoring on a 30-yard pass that pushed their lead to 32-6.
Loraine regained its composure from there. Pantoja thwarted Jayton’s next series with an interception. Two plays later, he rifled a 12-yard scoring strike to Gabriel Perez for the team’s second TD. Major Emerson hauled in the extra-point conversion seconds later and pulled LHS to within 32-13.
Jayton scored on its next two possessions and pushed its lead to 44-13 before Loraine found the end zone again. The Bulldogs’ final score came on a 12-yard pass from Pantoja.
Rotan, Hermleigh, Borden County and Irion County also competed in the tournament.
