The Jayton Jaybirds offered strong glimpses of great things to come during the first half of their home opener against the Knox City Greyhounds. They were able to match the strong Greyhound team which has been picked to win their district and go deep into the playoffs this year with long runs and passes on offense.
Tye Scogin was in his normal form leading the Jaybirds in running (17 rushes for 2 touchdowns) and passing (5 of 6 attempts for 70 yards) following the strong blocking of Pecos Smith. Smith, who was inserted at center after an injury to Keldon Moorhead, and other blockers provided Scogin, Aaron Hernandez and Kaden Awe ample time to move the ball. Also scoring for the Jaybirds were Hernandez and Tripp Scott. At the end of the first half, the score was 48 to 42 in favor of Knox City.
The third quarter did not go in favor of the Jaybirds. After an early knee injury to Hernandez, the Jaybirds were unable to adjust to match the strong Greyhound attack. The defense gave up 38 points in the third quarter alone and were shut out completely in the second half on offense. The Jayton defense played strong in the fourth quarter, only giving up 6 points, showing grit and determination.
This young Jayton team, while disappointed in the outcome of the game, was able to provide a strong indication that putting together a complete game will result in wins, accompanied by a strong playoff run. Another silver lining for the Jaybirds is the fact that they won’t have to wait long for the return of the senior Moorhead and the junior Hernandez.
The Jaybirds now look forward to Friday, Sept.7 when they travel to face the Aspermont Hornets in non-district action.
