The Jayton Jaybirds finished their preseason against the Ira Bulldogs in an away scrimmage on Friday, August
24. Both programs looked to gain an advantage over the other in preparation for their first regular season game next week. While the result of the scrimmage didn’t count for or against their overall record, the competition level rose higher as the matchup wore on.
Both varsity squads played 15 snaps on offense and defense, followed by opportunities for the junior varsity to play. The scrimmage finished with one live quarter for the varsity. Facing a tough test against a large Ira team returning several key starters this year, the Jaybirds were able to move the ball down the field regularly on the ground and in the air. Their defense exerted consistent pressure, making several key stops.
Tye Scogin led in rushing with five attempts for 34 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Kaden Awe held strong in the passing game, connecting with sophomore wide receiver Tripp Scott for two touchdowns. The Jaybirds ran a balanced attack without senior center Keldon Moorhead, who broke his finger in a previous scrimmage. Moorhead is hopeful to return to the field in a few weeks. On defense, the Jaybirds were all over the field wreaking havoc for the Bulldog offense. With three interceptions and two fumble recoveries, Jayton was able to improve their performance last week.
Junior Aaron Hernandez, who made a key interception late in the live quarter, has had a strong preseason while learning a new system in Jayton. “I’m more than excited to be here in Jayton,” said Hernandez with enthusiasm. “Being here has been a great opportunity for my family and also for me. The team has welcomed me with open arms and I am very thankful for that.” Hernandez will be called upon often to help the Jaybirds on both sides of the ball.
The Jaybirds now look to their first regular season matchup on Thursday, August 30 against the Knox City Greyhounds. Knox City, returning with several starters from last season, will serve as stiff competition against Jayton early in the season. Coach Josh Stanaland and the Jayton Jaybirds welcome tough competition and look forward to the challenge before them.
