Kent County’s Bruce Long Food Pantry is having a fund drive for Christmas Boxes, according to local correspondent Bert Stanaland.
The Pantry serves 32 families in Kent County. It does not receive any government funding, instead operating on donations from individuals.
Once a month South Plains Food Bank from Lubbock delivers groceries already boxed up to Jayton, and the Jayton school brings students/staff to load the groceries in the recipients' cars.
The food bank was started by the churches of Jayton in 2002 and named after Bruce Long, postmaster and friend of the community. At that time Rev. Jim Rainbolt drove to Lubbock and picked up the groceries from South Plains Food Bank, and volunteers met in the basement of the Methodist Church to pack the boxes. Later the operation moved to the old Kent County Nursing Home, where it is housed today.
All money donated will be spent on groceries; the work is all volunteer help. Donations may be made at the Kent County State Bank or via check to The Bruce Long Food Pantry, P.O. Box 253, Jayton, TX 79528.
