The goal for the Jayton Jaybirds in their Bi-District playoff game against the Throckmorton Greyhounds was to employ the shock and awe factor from the opening play. Boy did they ever accomplish their goal. Sophomore Pecos Smith received the opening kickoff in his end zone and preceded to zig and zag his way to the Greyhounds’ end zone without being touched.
The Greyhounds answered their opponents by scoring a rushing touchdown on their second play from the line of scrimmage. The Throckmorton score came on a play when the running back pitched the ball to one of his teammates as the running back was being taken down by the entire Jaybird interior defense. The Jaybirds knew that they had defended the play well only to allow the ball carrier to find his way to pay dirt.
It was the only touchdown the Greyhounds would see during the contest. When all was said and done, the Jaybirds defeated the Greyhounds 60 to 6 to end the game at halftime. Coming off a strong win against Groom, the Jaybirds looked forward to continuing their success in the running game. While the rushing game was solid, senior quarterback Kaden Awe used his arm to pick apart the Greyhound defense. Awe wound up throwing 4 touchdowns for 152 yards on 4 completions. Juniors Tye Scogin and Cameron Benavides gave the Throckmorton defense fits by torching the Greyhounds with two receiving touchdowns apiece. All four touchdown passes stretched the defense for long gains. Scogin and Smith also added rushing touchdowns.
The story of the game was the Jayton defense who rarely allowed the Greyhounds to find footing in their game plan. The defense forced 6 fumbles, recovering 3 of them. As the second quarter was close to ending, Scogin scooped up a fumble at the Greyhound 30-yard line and returned it for a touchdown. Junior Aaron Hernandez recorded 10 tackles to lead the Jaybirds.
The Bi-District Champion Jayton Jaybirds now look to face the Blackwell Hornets in the Regional Semifinal at Trent High School on Friday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. The 11-0 Hornets will be a huge test for this Jayton team which is playing their best football at the right time of the year.
