At press time the Patton Springs Lady Rangers are 7-0 in 1A Region II District 15 play. On their heels are the Spur Spurettes at 6-1. The Spurettes will be hosting the Lady Rangers Tuesday, February 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Spur — for the last game of district play. The Lady Rangers have already clinched a district playoff spot. However, should the Spurettes prevail on February 5, the two would share the district title in a tie.
“The last time these two teams met in Patton Springs folding chairs had to be brought into the gym to accommodate all the fans,” said Assistant Coach Shaundale Schaffner.
Even though the Lady Rangers have two other games before the Spur shoot-out, Motley County (0-7) and Guthrie (1-6), the chances are pretty good that the Spurettes will be the only thing standing between Patton Springs and outright district championship.
It’s been an amazing season for the Lady Rangers, and according to Schaffner, there have been several factors in Patton Springs’ success. “This group of girls has been together for four years, and it’s made a big difference,” she said.
“Last summer they played on an AAU travel team, and they traveled far and wide playing basketball all summer long. It really improved their understanding of the game and their athletic capabilities,” Schaffner added.
“At all times we have five solid girls on the court,” she said.
For the season, the Lady Rangers are 16-3 and the Spurettes are 19-9.
