For the first time in school history, the Patton Springs Lady Rangers captured the Area championship title in girls’ basketball. Friday, Feb. 15, 2019, in Post, they defeated the Roby Lady Lions 61-54.
Four days later, the Lady Rangers were back in the playoff pressure cooker with the regional quarterfinals against Hermleigh Tuesday night, Feb.19, at Roosevelt. (Press-time for The Texas Spur is 5 p.m. Tuesday, and the game was at 7 p.m. For results, see our Facebook page.)
Going into the game, Hermleigh’s Lady Cardinals were ranked #9 in the state in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 poll. Patton Springs was ranked #14—a curious distinction considering that in the only other meeting between the two teams this year, the Lady Rangers prevailed over the Lady Cardinals 42-35 on Nov. 16.
Patton Springs took an 11-game winning streak into the regional quarterfinals rendezvous at Roosevelt. The undefeated District 15-1A champs’ only losses in a to-date 20-3 season were to the #1 and #2 teams in the state. The Lady Rangers fell to the #1 team in the state, the Nazareth Swiftettes, 60-31 on Nov. 10, and Patton Springs lost twice to the #2 team in the state, the Ropes Lady Eagles, 65-40 on Dec. 15 and 52-45 on Jan. 2.
It’s worth noting that the #1 and #2 teams in the state were undefeated against any 1A team this year. Nazareth and Ropes each lost only to teams in tournaments or non-conference play that were in the 2A to 6A UIL districts.
