Friday social media — Facebook, Twitter and Instagram — buzzed with excitement across the 1A world. The University Interscholastic League streamed a paid subscription service to enable schools and friends and families to watch the track meet events online which ran into the late evening at The University of Texas's Mike A. Myers track complex in Austin.
Small-school sports-media specialists — such as Texas 1A fan, 806 Sports Connection and Six-mania — reported live from the scene with photos and video interviews. Coaches and family members added to the crowdsourced reporting with photos of finish lines and Jumbotrons.
The University of Texas reported an attendance that exceeded 25,000 at the Mike A. Myers track complex in Austin.
It was a day full of serendipity and surprises.
Spur sophomore Jorden Zarate started the day off with a come-from-behind photo finish in the 3200 meter and set a new school record to win a State 1st place gold medal. Senior Keaton Adams, who had set the school record in pole vault at the Regional meet in San Angelo, finished in 6th place. In the 110-meter hurdles, while the UIL announcers speculated that the Iredell runner was expected to win the race, said runner took a tumble, and Spur's Jacob Cole never missed a stride, winning the race and the gold. “I thought our kids came out and competed very well. Jacob and Jorden both won events that, coming into the day, they weren't supposed to stand a chance at,” said Tate Clark, track coach. “It's nice to see our kids competing at this level. It's also great that most of these kids have a chance to come back next year and shoot for that State Team title to add onto it.” Here are complete results:
