Spur’s Jacob Cole scored a 17-yard touchdown on the Bulldogs second play from scrimmage to make the game 8-0 and Ropes would never catch up, eventually falling to the Bulldogs 66-50.
Spur never trailed, as they scored touchdowns on 9 of their 11 possessions. Featuring their most balanced offensive attack all season, Spur rushed for 250 yards (Cole 6/123, Ethan Parsons 14/119, Zage Barron 3/8) and passed for 256 yards as Parsons went 10/13, with Isaiah Sanchez leading all receivers, catching 3 for 116 yards and a touchdown.
When asked if this balance was the plan, Coach Tate Clark said, “It wasn’t planned. The sweep wasn’t there, they were overcrowding everything I tried to run, so I thought maybe I could soften them up a little bit and throw the ball and it worked out pretty well. And when we finally got a few passes off our sweeps started opening back up a little bit more.”
Clark’s adjustment worked to perfection as Ropes had no answers for the balanced attack. While the Ropes team also fielded a formidable offense, Clark credited his players’ fight for ultimately bringing home the victory. “Tonight, we had a pretty good team in Ropes, probably the best we’ve played since Crowell. They had a lot of speed, and they are physical,” Clark said. “The boys knew that with mistakes it would be a tough game, and we had a few of them but we overcame and we fought hard. That’s all you can ask for from all of them. Every single one of them was fighting their butt off the whole game.”
When asked which players stepped up on the night, Clark said, “Isaiah and Ethan—they connected for big plays over and over again. Francisco—he runs my offense better than I could have ever expected. My O-line was doing what they’re supposed to do. The defense was making plays even when things weren’t working the way they were supposed to.”
Opportunistic defense and a balanced offense leave this Spur team looking more and more like a legitimate contender. The Bulldogs (4-1) travel to O’Donnell (2-3) Friday night, Oct. 5.
