The Spur Bulldogs faced their last opponent of the regular season Friday night, Nov. 8, versus the Lorenzo Hornets. The cool evening kicked off at 7:30 to determine a 10-0 season for the Bulldogs—who took the win 52-7 to notch their first-ever 10-0 season since playing six-man football.
Spur’s last 10-0 season was in 1994, when the school still played the 11man game. The 2024 Bulldogs have conquered a goal and made history.
Friday night started with the Bulldogs kicking the ball to Lorenzo, and ended with the Bulldog victory. Two plays into the game, Spur’s #3 Joshua Ortiz recovered a fumble, and on the following play ran the ball into the end zone for a Bulldog touchdown.
The defense held the Hornets on downs to get the ball back. A little trouble for the offense followed, though, with an interception that resulted in the only Hornet touchdown of the game.
The Bulldogs received the ball, and three plays later #6 Ace Walker scored with a 35-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good.
The Bulldogs’ defense was on point as #1 Brody Dempsey had a pick-six, running the ball back 80 yards and kicking the extra points.
The Bulldogs held the Hornets again, and #7 Haden Howell threw a 15yard pass to Dempsey for a touchdown. Dempsey’s kick was good.
The Hornets defense tried to respond, but #21 JD Hamilton forced a fumble. #10 Margarito Pesina swooped it up and ran 20 yards for a touchdown—all within the first quarter, leaving the score Spur 34, Lorenzo 7.
Second-quarter action was not much different from the first. The Bulldogs’ defense was too much for the Hornets. Walker scored, Howell threw a 20-yard pass to #15 Jagger Zarate for a touchdown, and Dempsey scored with zero seconds left on the clock for the first half.
The game ended via the mercy rule, 52-7.
“We started slow,” said Coach Hamilton, “but I was proud of the kids coming and finishing it off.”
Fun was had by all as the fans set off confetti cannons and players returnd to the locker room sliding through a massive puddle of water. Even Coach Hamilton got in on the action.
The Spur Bulldogs are playoff bound, going up against Newcastle in Munday Friday, Nov. 15. Travel to Munday to cheer on your Bulldogs!
