The Bulldogs launched their 2024-25 season on their home field at Jones Stadium August 29 against the Wellman-Union Wildcats.
The familiar atmosphere for six-man football was filled with excitement as the teams warmed up and the fans flooded the stands. The array of blue and gold was back in full swing so support the Bulldog team.
TheSpurBulldogsbegan the game receiving the ball. Ace Walker would score for the Bulldogs with a 1-yard carry after catching a 9-yard pass from Haden Howell for a Bulldogs touchdown. Brody Dempsey’s kick was good, making the score 8-0. The strong Bulldog defense would take the field and hold the Wildcats. The teams battled defensively, ending the first quarter, 8-0 Spur.
The second quarter proceeded in the same vein. The Bulldogs held the Wildcats, getting the ball back on the 20-yard line, then advanced down the field into Bulldog territory.
Haden Howell threw a 20-yard completed pass to AceWalkerforaSpurtouchdown. The extra-point kick by Brody Dempsey was no good, bringing the score to 14-0. The Bulldogs’ defense was in full force. Brody Dempsey would intercept a long pass from the Wildcats offense, allowing the Bulldogs to execute five offensive plays to score. Ace Walker walked it into the endzone for the Bulldogs, and Dempsey’s kick was good.
With the Bulldogs leading the game 22-0, the home team’s defense was too much for the Wildcats. JD Hamilton would start the series of defensive plays with a sack. The Wildcats tried to respond, but the Bulldogs held them and took over on the 40-yard line. On the first offensive play, Haden Howell threw a 32-yard pass to Josh Ortiz for a Bulldog touchdown. Brody Dempsey’s kick was good to end the quarter 30-0 Spur.
The Bulldogs and Wildcats fought phenomenal defensive battle during the third quarter. The Bulldogs held the Wildcats and executed several offensive plays that would end the quarter with a 40-yard run from Josh Ortiz for a Bulldog touchdown. Dempsey kicked the extra point, making the score 38-0 to end the quarter.
In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs held the Wildcats, taking over the ball near the 40-yard line and executing five offensive plays before scoring. Walker received the ball from Howell and ran 20 yards for a touchdown. The Bulldog offense missed a one-point conversion and wound up one point shy from ending the game, 44-0.
The Bulldog defense held the Wildcats on downs and got the ball back. The offensive team kicked back in, allowing Josh Ortiz to score with a 9-yard run to end the game, 50-0 Spur.
Interim coach Craig Hamilton, who was substituting during Head Coach Tate Clark’s extended illness, said, “We did some really good things this week. We have a lot of things to clean up, but I feel very confident we can clean it up and head in a positive direction.”
Spur will face the Ira Bulldogs in Ira at 7:30 Friday, September 6, for their week 2 matchup. Come on out and watch the battle of the Bulldogs!
