The Spur Bulldogs varsity football team defeated the Valley Patriots 67–22 Nov. 1 via the mercy rule, in an away matchup.
The Bulldogs received the ball by winning the toss to start the game. Valley kicked an onside kick to start, and the Bulldogs began the fight. They worked their way down to the end zone. #10 Margarito Pesina ran the ball 15 yards for a Bulldog touchdown, but the kick attempt was no good.
The Patriots responded with a touchdown and tacked on the two extra points for an 8-6 lead.
The Bulldogs executed five successive plays, culminating in #6 Ace Walker rushing 25 yards for a touchdown, followed by a kick by #1 Brody Dempsey to bring the score to 8-14 Spur.
With 6:14 left in the first quarter, Spur’s defense was ready. #3 Joshua Ortiz forced a fumble, which was recovered by Dempsey. The Bulldogs advanced to midfield. #7 Haden Howell passed a 51-yard to #3 Joshua Ortiz for a touchdown. Dempsey’s kick was good, advancing the score to 8-22 Spur.
The Bulldogs held the Patriots by downs and got the ball back with 1:42 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs ended the quarter leading 22-8.
Spur had the ball to start the second quarter. Spur would lose the ball on a fumble, but quickly got the ball back by #30 Adrian Garza-West, forcing a staggering fall in the endzone resulting in a safety.
Spur then scored on the basis of three offensive plays by Walker, with a 25yard pass to Dempsey. The points-after kick was no good, bringing the score to 8-30 Spur.
The Bulldog Defense held the Patriots on downs; it was a Bulldog ball with
4:38 left in the first half, and Ortiz passed to #15 Jagger Zarate for a 45-yard reception and touchdown. Dempsey then passed to
#52 Steven Hulme for an extra point, making the score 8-37 Spur, with 3:01 left in the half. The Patriots responded and scored, tacking on six more for a
14-37 score. The Bulldogs ended the first half with Ortiz passing a 17-yard pass to Walker for a touchdown, and Dempsey passing to Hulme for the extra point. Spur was on top, 14-44.
The Bulldogs started the second half on defense. The Patriots scored one last time of the game, for a score of
22-44, Spur. The Bulldog offense took over. In the first play, Ortiz passed to #10 Pesina for a 43-yard touchdown; Dempsey’s kick was good for a 22-52 score.
Spur’s defense would hold Patriots the rest of the game. Ortiz and Zarate would score with the extra points by Dempsey and Hulme to end the game by the mercy rule.
Coach Hamilton said he was “very proud of the kids going into the environment that we haven’t won in several years and figuring out a way to get the win.”
Spur will play their last home game Friday, Nov.
