that I thank the editors/ publishers of your newspaper for welcoming back Check Your Mirrors. The return to writing this column after a summer hiatus makes me chuckle at this life into which I have stumbled at the age of 67.

Dalton appointed Patton Springs ISD trustee in August meeting

In the regular meeting of the Patton Springs ISD board trustees on August 7, 2023, trustees unanimously approved appointing Ronda Dalton as a school board member to fill the seat vacated by Tyler Fairchild, with a term expiring in 2024.

Texans asked to conserve energy in heat wave

the power grid for much of the state asked Texans to conserve energy use several times last week as the grid was beset with high demand and low wind-power generation, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

STAAR scores show continued struggles in math, reading

AUSTIN— Texas public student scores in standardized testing continue to improve since the pandemic, but more than half of those taking the test still struggle with math and just under half read below grade-level, the Texas Tribune reported.

For much of this broiling- hot summer in Texas, the temps north of here have been temptingly cool. Your Texas Spur editor and publisher have thought often about that after returning from our June trip to Fort Morgan, Colorado, and other points northwest.

I’m not one to share memes, you understand. For the most part, life’s too short. But having helped prepare my own kids and grandson for their first days of school—back in a more innocent-seeming time, to be sure—I recognized both the humor and wisdom in the often-shared post below.
