CUISINE & CULTURE Pumpkins are autumn. Harvest pumpkins in the garden when mature, fully developed and uniform in color. The rind will be firm and resist denting when pressed with a thumbnail. The inside flesh of fully mature pumpkins will never show greening.

State historian to lead visit to Standifer, Higgins graves Oct. 12

The red gravestone stands alone, iron-fenced and far out in the broken country of northern Kent County, Texas, on private land. Atop it, visitors have placed coins, which weath- er in the elements. Beside it lies an empty plastic mini-bottle that once contained a shot of Fireball.
