Jaybirds trounce Patriots in lopsided win “Look at them.” That was the message of head coach Josh Stanaland to his Jayton football team as the members of the 1984 State Champion team lined the track behind him, celebrating the 40th anniversary of their big win.

2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the Jayton Jaybirds’ first State football championship. On Friday, Sept. 13, during the halftime of the Jayton–Valley game, the school recognized coaches, advisers, players and cheerleaders associated with the State champions.

The Spur junior varsity and junior high football squads traveled to Aspermont last Thursday, and though they didn’t come out with a win, the Bullpups and Bulldogs showed improvements and fought on the field. In the junior high team’s first game, #6 Hazen Hall scored the only touchdown for Spur.

Spur met up with Aspermont at their home field at Jones Stadium for the week three matchup on September 13. The Spur Bulldogs came out with the win, 72-32, making them 3-0 for the preseason. Spur won the toss and opted to receive the ball to start the game against the Aspermont Hornets.

Jayton boys win Mae Simmons XC meet, girls finish 4th

TheJaytonHighSchool Varsity Cross Country teams competed in the Lubbock Invitational at Mae Simmons Park. The Lady Jays finished 4th, with Jace Chisum taking first place. The Jaybirds posted great individual times as well taking home the championship.

COMING UP SEPT. 13: JAYTON TO HONOR 40TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF STATE TEAM Just outside the Klondike tunnel, the Cougar cheerleaders erected a paper sign for their team to run through which read, “Warning! Destruction Ahead!”

In their second meet of the season, all the girls improved their times on a more difficult course. Olivia Ortiz earned a medal, with a 14:41 time for 24th place. The teams were slated to run Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at the Rattlesnake Run in Guthrie.
