Charles Harvey
Cannon, Sr., 1937–2026
We are heartbroken to share the news that passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026 with his family and friends gathered around him.
Our sorrow today is greatly outweighed by the full and wonderful life he lived for over 88 years. He was born in Ringgold, Texas, to Robert and Johnnye Cannon on August 30, 1937 and raised on the Cannon homestead on White River.
He returned to the family’s land after a brief time away working as a lineman and his service in Germany with the U.S. Army. He soon married Ineta Kidd Cannon on June 30, 1960, and built a fulfilling and joyful life together for 66 years, providing a stable and full home for their children. Harvey and Ineta were resolutely self-reliant but always willing to help a friend or share the joy of life’s big moments.
A remarkably resourceful and intuitive rancher, Harvey was able to fix anything mechanical, manage crazy cows, calm skittish horses, cure sick dogies and never run out of feed or water, no matter how bad the drought got. He was always ahead of the curve, switching between growing, harvesting and managing livestock, in sync with the land, including many hours before sunrise baling hay despite never being a morning person.
He played an important role in the Spur community, from trading stories of important agribusiness information over coffee at the Coop, to serving on the board of directors for South Plains Electric for 22 years.
Harvey always had time for a good conversation for anyone. His children, Jo Tracy Lopez, Robert Trey CannonandCharlesHarvey Cannon Jr., will be eternally grateful for the example Harvey provided about how to be a good person, how to live a good life, and how to remain happy, no matter what happens. We will always remember him at his happiest, driving his pickup out in the country, counting cows and calves and checking water, knowing he was right where he should be.
He is survived by his wife, Ineta Cannon; daughter, Tracy Lopez (Eusebio) of Spur; son Trey Cannon (Haydee) of Round Rock Texas; son Chuck Cannon (Chai-Shian) of Yunnan, China; sister Robbie Fusselman of Crosbyton, Texas; brother Leroy Cannon of Spur; one niece; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his father, Robert William Cannon, and mother, Johnnye Beth Harvey Cannon.
We would like to thank the staff, nurses and CNAs at Kent County Nursing Home who lovingly cared for him during his time there, and Hospice of the South Plains for their support and care during his final days. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at the Methodist Church in Spur on August 15, 2026, at 10 a.m.
